Tag team surfing involves teams of surfers competing rather than individuals surfing against each other.
Jay Carter, club president, was the first to develop the concept and rules for tag team surfing in 1986.
Jay grew up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. He was involved in nippers surf lifesaving at a young age, and then from the age of 12 competed in the surfing events at his local Bronte Boardriders club. There weren’t too many surfing competitions that young kids could enter back then, so the boardriders club was not only a good social event but it allowed you to compete and show of your surfing skills.
Jay then worked for many years as a professional lifeguard at Bondi. One wintery day, when there wasn’t much happening, he wrote down the “rules” for his concept of tag team surfing.
There are different forms of tag team surfing events held throughout Australia and the world today. However, Jay Carter‘s original copyrighted concept is still regarded as the best in the market.
Jay is one of the great innovators in the surfing industry. He has also been included in the surfing Australia Honour Roll for his Tag Team Format in the Surfing Culture Innovation/Project Application of Ideas category.
His extensive surfing and events experience, pure energy and the personal enjoyment and fun he gains from staging his concept of the Tag Team surfing events is what keeps him motivated and challenged.
The events are a great buzz. There’s excitement, team work and everyone has great fun.
