The ASI Level 2 Surfing Instructor course is the next step in your surfing instructor career.  Take your students to the next level and start teaching them how to do bottom and top turns, cutbacks and linking manoeuvres in 3ft surf, and other essential surfing skills at this level.

This course is recognised as the best and most comprehensive surfing instructor course.  Study by attending a workshop or completing the ASI online learning course.

An ASI accredited surfing instructor is part of the ASI worldwide community.  Your qualification is international. You get to work with great people in amazing locations. 

Instruct individuals at the improver to intermediate surfing level. 

Instruct in surf / green waves up to 3ft (1 metre).

  • Surfing instructor in the surfing or outdoor recreation industry.

  • Industry job roles that require surfing knowledge (e.g. marketing sales, retail, travel)

Before starting this course, you will have:

  • at least 750 hours surfing experience at various surf breaks. 

  • have surfing skill and knowledge equivalent to ASI Level 7 Advanced Surfer - including being able to perform top turn, bottom with spray, re-entry, cutback and roundhouse cutback in 4ft to 6ft surf.

  • minimum of 12 months surfing instruction experience. (requirement may be waived if you have advanced to elite advanced surfing ability)

  • hold ASI Level 1 Surfing Instructor certificate. 

    (non ASI Level 1 Certificates may be accepted based on experience and surfing ability. Additional course work is required)

  • English speaking skills (online courses have translation)

  • The role of the level 2 surfing instructor

  • Identifying intermediate level surfing session risks and hazards

  • Emergency processes and responses

  • Logistics and how to plan improver-intermediate surfing sessions

  • Suitable boards and equipment

  • Creating improver-intermediate lesson plans

  • Instruction and coaching methods for improver-intermediate students

  • Progression techniques from beginner to improver level

  • Instructions techniques and drills

  • ASI Surf Wise learn to surf program  - levels 4, 5 and 6. 

  • Assessing student’s performance 

The following study options are available for this course.

Workshop:  An intensive course that focuses on the major components, with the ability to interact with the trainer and the group. 
Duration:  2 days. 

Flexible Online Learning:  Study in your own time with ASI's e-learning platform.  Upload video to demonstrate skills. 

Update:  For ASI instructors whose qualification has expired and need to regain the ASI qualification. This is an online course option.

Online Courses - ASI's E-learning Platform
ASI's e-learning platform provides access to training manuals, videos, reference materials and assessments. 

An intensive course that focuses on the major components, with the ability to interact with the trainer and the group. 
Duration:  2 days.

Course Requirements

At Workshop:

  • Complete theory and exercises, practice to complete your written project.

  • Demonstrate ASI Level 7 Intermediate surfing ability.

After Workshop:

  • Submit 1 written project.   

  • Complete 15 practical hours experience (5 hours signed off in workshop).

Other:

Note: Surf Rescue and First Aid Certificates can be provided before or after workshop or within 12 months of enrolment. 

Time to Complete: You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.  

Re-assessment Fees: Apply if not yet competent in surfing ability or project. Fees

    Submit video/s demonstrating your own surfing ability at the ASI Level 7 Intermediate surfing level.

  • Submit 1 written assessment.

  • Submit a current ASI Surf Rescue certificate or other surf rescue certificate. Refer to: Acceptable Rescue certificates

  • Submit a current senior first aid certificate. Refer to: Acceptable First Aid certificates

  • Submit identification

  • Submit child check (if applicable to your country)

This is an online course option.

There is no requirement to complete practical hours experience.  Previously submitted surfing ability video can used.

Entry Requirements
Hold an ASI L2 Surfing Instructor certificate – completed within the past 3 years.  
(contact ASI if you completed the ASI training prior to this).

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:

  • Surf clothing

  • Fibreglass surfboard to demonstrate your own ASI Level 7 advanced surfing skills.

  • A student at the improver level (for your project).  

  • Beginner soft-top boards with soft fins and leash and/or fibreglass board for your student project  (depending on their level of ability).  

  • Computer or mobile phone to access ASI’s elearning platform to view ASI Learn to Surf Beginner and Intermediate level online reference manuals.

  • Video camera or mobile phone to take video of practical skills.
