Perform simple rescues in SUP enclosed flat water and exposed waters locations.

Conduct rescues at:  

• Inland waterways including rivers, lakes, estuaries, canals

• Coastal locations, with flat water, no breaking waves.

• Water safety roles within the SUP industry or outdoor recreation industry. 

• A current SUP rescue certificate is required for ASI instructors operating in SUP enclosed or exposed waters environments.

• Assistant instructors

• Identify emergency situations
• Respond to emergency situations
• Apply SUP rescue techniques
• Demonstrate in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients using single and double roll methods
• Identify the signs of potential spinal injuries and respond and treat accordingly
• Emergency signals and incident reporting

Before starting this course, you must have:

• Be medically and physically fit.

• Able to swim 100 metres (328 ft), run 200 metres (650 ft), prone paddle SUP board 200 metres (650ft) - within 10 minutes - without stopping.

• English speaking skills.

The following study options are available for this course.

Workshop:  An intensive course that focuses on the major components, with the ability to interact with the trainer and the group. 
Duration:  4 hours 

Flexible Online Learning:  Study in your own time with ASI's e-learning platform.  Upload video to demonstrate skills. 
Duration: approx 20 hours including time to take video.

ASI's E-learning Platform
ASI's e-learning platform provides access to training manuals, videos, reference materials and assessments.  Access is available for all the above delivery options. 

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:

• Flat water stand up paddle board, paddle, coiled leash 

• SUP clothing suitable for paddling and suitable for immersion in water when performing rescues

In addition, for Online learning courses: 

• Computer or mobile phone to access ASI e-learning platform  

• Another person to be your patient (for online learning and flexible trainer options) 

• Video camera or mobile phone to take video of practical skills  (for online learning option) 

• GPS tracking device such as a watch or phone GPS apps to record your fitness mission test eg...map my run. Or submit google map.

Knowledge

Complete multi-choice tests.

Skills

• Complete timed fitness mission test: swim 100 metres (328 ft), run 200 metres (650 ft), prone paddle SUP board 200 metres (650ft) within 10 minutes, without stopping.

• Demonstrate correct technique to rescue an unconscious person using double roll method with your SUP board (in deep water) and paddling patient successfully back to shore.

• Submit a current senior first aid certificate

First Aid Certificates can be provided before or after workshop or within 12 months of enrolment. 

Time to Complete 
You have 12 months from date of workshop, or date of online enrolment, to complete all course requirements.  

Re-assessment Fees
Re-assessment fee applies if not yet competent in your Mission Fitness test or the SUP Rescue.  Fees

ASI Stand Up Paddle Water Safety Rescue Award (Flat Water)
Valid for 24 months.

There is no renewal for this certificate.  To obtain a new certificate, participants complete the course again to update skills and knowledge.
