Hawaii has passed a bill banning sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, chemicals because it has now been proved they are detrimental to coral growth and increase the rate of coral bleaching.
The state legislature passed the ban in May 2018, and David Ige. The ban will effect until January 1, 2021.
In 2015, a team of scientists found that the oxybenzone acted like a hormone disruptor to baby coral, and damaged their DNA. “It causes weird deformities in soft tissue and also causes the coral larvae to encase itself in its own skeleton, in its own coffin,” Craig Downs, the director of the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory and one of the authors of the 2015 study, told the Guardian at the time. If these chemicals are detrimental to coral growth, are they also detrimental to humans?
Wellness Mama says “if you can’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin”.
Here at ASI, we agree !
Oxybenzone is used in plastics as an ultraviolet light absorber and stabilizer Oxybenzone is associated with allergic reactions triggered by sun exposure. In a study of 82 patients with photoallergic contact dermatitis, over one quarter showed photoallergic reactions to oxybenzone

Remember, asbestos was touted as a miracle building material. Now many years later, we now know asbestos is detrimental to human health. Asbestos fibers can cause serious and fatal illnesses including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis).
Could suncreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, be just as deadly??
What should you do?
1. Check the labels on sunscreens, make sure they do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate.
2. Wear natural sunscreens: such as zinc.
3. Cover up: the best method. Make sure you are wearing a hat and clothing that covers your body.
4. Limit your time in the sun. Or only go out in the times the sun is not the hottest. As a guide, this is generally outside the hours of 11am to 3pm.
It is a balancing act. The sun is vitally important for human functioning as we get Vitamin D from the sun.
BUT, putting harmful chemicals on your body is the not answer !
