Introducing Alan Fergusson, ASI SUP Instructor

AUSTRALIA. GOLD COAST. Introducing Alan Fergusson, ASI SUP Instructor, based on the sunny Gold Coast Qld Australia. Alan is a very young 60 years old, and is turning his passion into a career. 

What is your background?

Since living in Australia I have enjoyed water sports. I brought my first paddle board back in December 2012. I live on the Gold Coast Queensland where I can paddle all year round without a wetsuit on the local water ways. I have had the opportunity to paddle is some amazing waters around Australia and overseas in Bali. I also have completed in local races and charity events.

What got you involved in the sport?

In my late 20s I got into windsurfing and did that for a number of years. I bought a JP Australia paddle board with a windsurfer rig so I could learn to paddle board too, but then paddling took over from windsurfing and the rest is history. I still have my JP 10’2 but no windsurfer rig anymore.

Why did you become an ASI instructor? 

After paddling for a number of years I wanted to learn more.  I was helping a friend who was an instructor and I enjoyed, so after being in the motor trade for over 30 years I was ready for a change in career and could see the potential of becoming an instructor.

What are you doing now? 

I’m currently taking lessons for small groups of up to 4 people at a time and doing tours of the Gold Coast waterways. I am also involved with a local Sup club where I organise and run social events and training days on a regular basis.

What do you like about being an ASI instructor? 

Having a career that I enjoy and passing on my knowledge to others.  Seeing people who have never been on a paddle board, stand up and paddle for the first time is always rewarding. It also keeps up my fitness now that I am 60 yrs.
