Discover how a lifelong passion for watersports transformed into a fulfilling SUP Instructor career! This article takes you through the inspiring journey of MarcoTeodosio, a SUP instructor based in the picturesque city of Amersfoort, Netherlands.

What is your background?  / Where do you live?

I use to bodyboard since I was a little kid and have always been interested in watersports.

I live in Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands.  It has historical canals through the city, surrounded by charming architecture and serene waters. There are also lakes, including the Eemmeer Lake about 13.4 kms square,  and smaller lakes and ponds in the surrounding nature reserves and parks, offering peaceful retreats.

I decided to make SUP my career so I could continue to be out on the water.
Being a SUP instructor is my full time job.

What got you involved in the sport?

In 2018, I had my first SUP experience with my friend Filipe.  I loved it and since then I have never stopped.

I loved the versatility of the sport you can paddle on flat water, in waves, and do ocean paddling.   I love the connection to nature, as you paddle along.

In 2019, I started SUP racing.   I have completed in national champions and some international races like ultradistance SUP 11-Cities in Friesland, a five-day, 220-kilometer race.

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

I love stand-up paddling so much that I want to share it with others.

I chose ASI because of the comprehensive training.  I believe it’s important to have a solid foundation to effectively pass on knowledge and safety principles to those I teach.

What are you doing now?

Now I have a SUP School, in Netherlands, together with my girlfriend. We are both instructors there.

I live in a beautiful place with a beautiful lagoon, and it’s great to show others its beauty through stand up paddle.

What do you like about being an instructor?

I enjoy sharing the beauty and versatility of stand-up paddling with others. Whether it’s teaching lessons or demonstrating what’s possible with a SUP board—touring, racing, or SUP surfing—I love inspiring enthusiasm and creating a passion for the sport.

What I value most is working with the sport I love and having the opportunity to share it with so many different people and seeing the impact and benefits people get when paddling.

Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing.

Last season we had a student that was having a lot of mental issues.  She had become a recluse, not leaving home for months on end.  She decided to give it a try and learn to stand up paddle with us!

It completely changed her mind set.   She felt way better, being surrounded by nature and it give her the will to go out outside and resume her life.  She now paddles on a regular basis.

It felt very good do help someone to bring back joy into their life.
