Mohamad’s journey is a testament to the bravery it takes to pursue what you love most and sharing it with others.

What is your background?

Hi, my name is Mohamad Khailany Bin Idris. I'm 41 years old and hail from Singapore.

I am an ocean enthusiast. I spent nearly a decade working as a Commercial Diver.

After saving up enough money, I decided to leave my high-paying job to pursue my passion by starting my own Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) business.

What got you involved in the sport?

What inspired me to get involved with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) was a combination of my deep passion for the ocean and my love for fitness.  SUP is an excellent full-body workout that engages the core, strengthens muscles, improves balance, and enhances cardiovascular health, making it a fantastic way to stay active.

Being at sea allows me to immerse myself in its beauty—the expansive, unblocked views, the refreshing sea breeze, and breathtaking sunsets.

Living in Singapore, a small island surrounded by calm waters, makes SUP the perfect activity to connect with both nature and physical well-being.

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

fell in love with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) from the very first time I tried it. As a relatively new sport, I’m passionate about spreading awareness of how enjoyable and beneficial it can be.

Teaching fellow ocean enthusiasts how to enjoy SUP safely and with the right techniques is something I truly love. From the beginning, I’ve envisioned various exciting progressions for the sport, such as SUP surfing, SUP racing, SUP touring, and SUP foiling.

After many years of paddling, I decided to take my love for SUP to the next level by sharing it with others. It was a big career move that marked a turning point in my life. In 2023, I proudly became a qualified ASI instructor, eager to inspire more people to embrace this amazing sport.

What are you doing now ?

I am currently a full-time SUP instructor, owning and operating my own stand-up paddle school where I offer rentals, supervised rentals, and lessons.

Additionally, I freelance as an instructor at Constant Wind Seasports, an ASI-accredited SUP school in Singapore.

What do you like about being an instructor?

Being an instructor allows me to indulge my deep love for the sea while connecting with people from all walks of life.

I enjoy teaching valuable skills and techniques that my students can carry with them for a lifetime, as well as building their confidence on the water and giving them an incredible SUP experience.

Nothing brings me greater fulfillment than unlocking their potential and seeing the excitement and pride in their eyes when they realize, 'Wow, I can do this!

Tell us about an inspiring story about your student(s) or memorable experiences,  you've had while instructing.

I once had a student from Japan who was visiting Singapore for a five-day vacation. It was her first time trying stand-up paddleboarding, and she took lessons with me during her stay.

To my surprise and delight, she told me that this was the best experience she had during her time in Singapore.

Moments like these truly make instructing such a rewarding journey!
