AUSTRALIA. GOLD COAST. Introducing ASI Surf Instructor, Dave Davidson. Dave grew up in Bondi and became a competitive surfer. He is currently a surfing instructor for surfers of all abilities and running his own surf school in Coolangatta.
What is your background?
I grew up in Bondi. I started surfing and competed on the world tour. Retired early and then got into surf coaching in 1993.I like coaching all levels of surfing. Won two Gold medals with the Peruvian surfing team at the I.S.A world surfing games with both their Open and Junior teams in 2010 and 2011.
What got you involved in the sport?
My neighbours got me into surfing. Growing up in Bondi the competitive energy there pushed me to become an accomplished surfer.
Why did you become an ASI instructor?
I was a surf instructor for surfing Australia for 10 years before ASI started. I knew Nigel from Bondi and got involved and qualified.
What are you doing now?
I run my surf school at Rainbow Bay Beach at Coolangatta. I coach elite surfers to complete beginners and I can guarantee to get beginners surfing within 20 minutes and intermediates learning new skills.
What do you like about being an ASI instructor?
I like being an ASI instructor because of their good values and are a global movement you have the opportunity to connect with instructors all around the globe. I have lots of respect for Tania (ASI CEO), I've seen the hard work she's done to create the global ASI network and watch it grow over the years.
Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?
A long time ago when Mick Fanning was a teenager, he organized a surfing lesson for his mum and sister with me. They were getting perfect small waves at Greenmount Beach, on Liz's last wave (Mick's mum) she put all her effort into the take off and accidentally spat her dentures out and surfed passed her daughter with a massive toothless grin. I didn't see what happened but the daughter was in a laughing fit. When I found out what had happened, I felt bad because she lost $800 of teeth in the sand. But she did surf the wave for 200 metres and was super stoked. The chances of finding those teeth were very slim. Later that night she called me to tell me that someone had handed her teeth to the lifeguard.to this day Liz has a chuckle every time we bump into each other in Coolangatta.
