Introducing ASI Surf Instructor, Ingemar Cressey!

UK. Introducing ASI Level 3 Surf Coach, Ingemar Cressey. Growing up in South Africa Ingemar was introduced to surfing by his brother at 8 years old. After a number of years travelling the world, he settled with his wife in Wales and together they set up a surf school, where they teach others the thrill of surfing!

What is your background?
I grew up surfing the beaches of South Africa doing some competitive surfing and then took on lifeguarding after school and travelled to a few countries working as a lifeguard, gaining travel and cultural experience. After this I settled with my wife in Wales and we set up Cresseys Surf Academy, where we continue to provide a summer season of learning to ride waves.

What got you involved in the sport?
My brother got me into surfing, I watched him surf growing up and was really keen to do it too, so he gave me a ride at 8 years old and I was sold.

Why did you become an ASI instructor?
I liked the structure and the customer service is really good.

What are you doing now?
I continue to run my surf academy in the summer months and work as a pool lifeguard in the winter months.

What do you like about being an ASI instructor?
I like being part of a team with a rich history in surfing and continue to be leading ambassadors for the sport and work.

Has COVID changed what you do?  How?
COVID has affected us in terms of local lockdowns and planning around the disruption that causes to lessons, however we have seen a higher interest in people wanting to learn how to surf.

Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?
I enjoy looking at the different creative gifts done that the parents and our pupils give us after the summer camps. So many times, I’ve taught people who have never taken much interest in the ocean, until catching their first wave and seeing the sheer exhilaration on thrill on their faces, which is also a great motivator.
