Balancing coaching, training, and judging, Leo has built a successful, fun, and fulfilling career in surfing, that allows him to inspire others to push their limits, enjoy the journey, and excel in the sport he loves.

What is your background?

I live in Lagos, Algarve, southwest of Portugal. 34 years old, I used to compete in surfing as a teenager, then I judged for the Portuguese Federation and the WSL for 8 years.

I gained my Master's degree in Psychology (focus on sport performance). Research topic:  “Neurofeedback: Sensorimotor rhythm reinforcement in young surfers.”

What got you involved in the sport?

I started surfing when I was 10, thanks to a family friend who lent me a board and an oversized wetsuit that filled with water. My brother and I loved it so much that we joined the Algarve Surf Club coached by the inspiring head coach, Sérgio Brandão—a club I never truly left.

What started as a fun summer activity in 2000 quickly became a year-round passion. Sérgio inspired us with his love for surfing, turning it into an exciting adventure—thrilling, challenging, and a little crazy. We often spent hours hunting for the best waves, sometimes ending up back where we began. We packed into jeeps with surfboards piled high, trekking to secret spots where we’d occasionally find perfect waves—and sometimes not. No sea, wave, or weather could stop us.

We pushed our limits skateboarding behind jeeps and had fun at Volcom parties, diving into the chaos of “mochadas.” It felt like we were living the rebellious, rock'n'roll side of surfing.  I was hooked on surfing and I never stopped—neither did my friends.

With Sérgio’s guidance, we started competing nationally in 2001 and at the European level from 2005 to 2010. Sérgio even took us to France every summer in his van, fully dedicating himself to training us. He became like a second father to me. During those years, I won regional championships, placed 3rd nationally in the Esperanças ranking, and finished 5th in the National Open in 2009.

Now, looking back, it’s not the results that matter most—it’s the unforgettable journey. And what an incredible journey it has been!

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

Sergio Brandão, my coach, mentor and second father heads up ASI Portugal I got involved in the development of the Portuguese Treinadore de Surfing instructor courses.

I feel a strong connection with ASI, as it stands out as a forward-thinking and efficient organization. Its approach emphasizes essential training for aspiring surf coaches while eliminating unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, ensuring a streamlined and effective path for professional development.

What are you doing now ?

I'm currently a surf coach at the Algarve Surf Club, where I train and mentor a new generation of young surfers.

I also work as an ASI Surfing Instructor Trainer, helping others become certified surfing instructors.

In between, I serve as a head judge at various regional and national competitions, as well as an international judge for WSL events, including junior and QS competitions.

It's a fulfilling mix of coaching, training, and judging!

What do you like about being an instructor?

I love having a job that keeps me outdoors. Working in an office just wouldn’t suit me!

Tell us about an inspiring story about your student(s) or memorable experiences,  you've had while instructing.

I work with competitive athletes who are passionate about achieving peak performance. My role goes beyond coaching—it’s about helping them understand the balance between pushing their limits and finding joy in the journey of excelling.

Training future surf instructors has been equally inspiring. People from diverse countries and backgrounds join the ASI instructor training, bringing their own unique perspectives and energy.

I truly enjoy challenging trainees to judge a WSL heat during training sessions. It’s always a dynamic and engaging experience, and sometimes their surf analysis skills are remarkably impressive!
