Introducing ASI Surfing Instructor, Severine Lencou, from France
Posted: 29 March 2025

Severine embraced a late career change to share her love of surfing, which she believes inspires positive change and joy.
What is your background?
Originally from France, I grew up near the ocean, lived in Paris, London and now live in Lisbon Portugal.
I'm a mum of three, and becoming a surf instructor was a late career change for me.
What got you involved in the sport?
I moved from London seven years ago, to Portugal, and completely fell in love with surfing.
I believe surfing not only makes you feel great but also inspires positive change.
Why did you become an ASI instructor?
It was definitely a desire to share my love of surfing. The sea and the experience of surfing have given me so much and I believe everyone should have the chance to improve and enjoy it too.
At almost 40, I felt out of place and unsure of myself. I realized this might be due to societal biases, so my friends and I started the surf association to approach surfing in a new way.
I became an ASI Surfing instructor to ensure I was delivering to the high standards that ASI offers.
What are you doing now ?
Currently, I run a surf association, based in Lisbon. The aim is to facilitate access to surf for women and everyone.
I’ve met so many women who feel nervous about surfing but are still drawn to the idea. Surfing isn’t just a sport—it’s also a way to heal and feel good. We can learn together. It’s not about becoming a pro; it’s about grabbing a board, getting out on the water and relaxing. The goal is to have fun, enjoy a welcoming space, and feel a deep connection to the ocean.
I do guided sessions for women. I give lessons. I organise mother and daughter surf retreats. I'm also working on a surf therapy project.
What do you like about being an instructor?
I love sharing my passion for surfing with others and watching my students progress.
Seeing their excitement when they catch their first wave is incredibly rewarding.
Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing.
One morning, while teaching a beginner surf class, we suddenly spotted two dolphins gliding through the waves just meters away. Everyone froze in awe as the dolphins playfully rode the swell, one even leaping out of the water as if showing off.
For a few magical minutes, we sat on our boards, completely mesmerized. Then, just as suddenly as they had appeared, they vanished into the horizon, leaving us with an unforgettable memory.
That day, my students didn’t just learn to surf—they experienced the true magic of the ocean.
