Introducing Merrick Davis, ASI Surfing Instructor

Introducing Merrick Davis, ASI surf school owner and instructor based at the famous Noosa Beach, Queensland, Australia.   He’s been operating there for over 25 years and runs a highly successful surf school.

What is your background?
I grew up on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, I used to play Rugby and Dad always took use to the beach to train. I played rugby at the highest level until 14 years of age. Dad once bought a bucket of KFC and with that they threw in a free foam surfboard, so after beach training I used to surf the foamy. I fell in love with catching the waves.
 
What got you involved in the sport?
 Living on the Northern Beaches most people start surfing early on in their lives. I wanted to move away from Rugby to an individual sport and surfing was a natural choice which turned into a pathway to a professional career. I joined the World Tour and was 2 times Australian and World Pro Am Champion which is the equivalent of the first world qualifying series in 1988.
 
Why did you become an ASI instructor?
 I moved to Noosa and there was an opportunity to start my own surf school. I choose to become accredited with ASI as I found them to be the most professional association to be involved with.
 
What are you doing now?
 I’m a husband and father of 2 girls and I’m still running Noosa Learn to Surf here in Queensland after 25 years. Where we teach is a perfect learner wave and it’s a great climate which enables us to run 7 days per week all year-round.
 
What do you like about being an ASI instructor?
 I enjoy giving back to people the joy and freedom of surfing that I learnt as a kid. Just seeing people having fun and learning new lifelong skills makes instructing so worthwhile.
 

Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?
We’ve had instructors from an opposing surf school ask us to teach their family members, that’s funny, interesting and nice!
