Parts of the Wave
Posted: 14 August 2024
In order to surf, you should become familiar with the different parts of the wave.
These are:
Wave face: the concave unbroken part of a wave where most manoeuvres can be performed.
Shoulder: less steep part of the wave face.
Lip: the top or crest of the wave. It’s the part that rises up, then throws out and over.
Wave curl / Pocket: the peeling part of the wave as it breaks. This is where most of the high-performance manoeuvres happen.
Trough: the bottom of the wave.
White water: the broken part of the wave. It’s also called the Foam or soup.
Impact zone: the place where all the force of the breaking wave hits the trough.
