Profile on ASI Master Surfing Coach Jeremy 'Jez' Browning

EUROPE:  Jez Browning is an ASI Level 4 Master Surfing coach.  He had a corporate career and gave it away to set up his own surf coaching business.

Jez tells us a bit about his background, what inspired him and what he currently does.

Jez was born and raised in Guernsey in the English Channel Islands. The whole family surfed and the islands are rich in surf culture. (Guersney’s surf history is deemed to be the first in Europe, dating back to 1923.)

His father (a surfer since 1958) taught him and his brother to surf from the age of five. He has since surfed, competed on a semi-pro level and coached all over the world.

He had a finance career as an FX Trader and Treasury dealer. At 27 he quit, and headed to the Algarve in Portugal to work as a surf coach.

After 8 years of surf coaching and managing surf schools in the Algarve, Jez decided it was time to strike out on his own and follow his true passion of high-end surf coaching.

In 2009, he created Unisurfity, that specialises in coaching the individual. As Jez explains: “At some point all surfers suffer from performance stagnation. We've all been there, whether you're just starting out and wanting to learn how to get outback through to not stomping that full rotation.

“Unisurfity is designed to help you out of your surfing rut - to re-inspire you and help achieve your goals. Whether its simple face turns or creating a whole heat winning repertoire for surfing titles, we have the knowledge, the tools and the destinations to get you to achieve your best.”

Surfing is a lifelong learning process though the surfing industry has the general view that you only need lessons when starting out as a beginner.

As Jez says: “To be honest that couldn't be further from the truth. Surfing outback is where the real challenges start. We see people who are self-taught, who have surfed for a lifetime, and who still have the fundamentals wrong.

We also see surfers with incredibly inefficient habits that need transforming. Having video coached for a very long time, my mind knows exactly what to look for, from just a glance. It's a gift but also a curse as I can't now just watch someone surf without critiquing!”

Jez uses a combination of skills training and techniques from video and frame by frame photo analysis to bio movement mechanics, personal goal setting and surf specific exercises and cross training drills. He also coaches students on board selection, wave and ocean theory and nutrition to get the best performances.

The surfing Bootcamps (intense training weeks) are hosted all over the world. With more and more exciting places due to be added to surf and train at.

The main focus is on self-improvement as Jez says: “Ultimately my aim is to make you a better surfer. And let’s face it, everyone who surfs, wants to improve their surfing. “

In his 15 plus years coaching career to date, Jez has trained surfers of all abilities, from beginner to professional. He’s coached national teams for the World Surfing Games as well as individual competitive surfers to the highest level.

Jez strives to be the best he can be. He has achieved ASI Level 4 Master surfing coach. This the highest surfing recognition you can get in the industry to date.  He also helps train and assess budding surf instructors for ASI.
