Research Report: A Biomechanical Analysis of The Stand-Up Paddle Board Stroke: A Comparative Study
Posted: 14 September 2020
A biomechanical analysis of the stand-up paddle board stroke report was released in November 2019. Conducted by J Peer at Bond University Australia.
The purpose of the study was to investigate SUP paddle stroke kinematics between inexperienced and experience paddlers. The information may be useful in improving performance and injury management, especially in the shoulder, hip and elbow.
It was acknowledged, that the SUP stroke does have considerable biomechanical differences to other paddling sports, namely SUP is standing and balancing on a board and other paddle sports are sitting.
The study identified significant differences between experienced and inexperienced SUP paddlers.
Inexperienced paddlers have greater total shoulder ROM and less hip flexion, relying heavily on shoulder and maybe the biceps and forearm musculature to generate force at entry and power phase.
Experienced paddlers rely less on shoulder and minimum elbow ROM but employ more hip flexion ROM. It suggests increased reaching motion at paddle entry.
Shoulder and elbow joints are injury prone areas for SUP paddlers and the above could be significant in terms of injury management.
The report also concluded that it is unclear at this stage whether the actions by experienced and inexperience paddlers may predispose them to injury.
