SUP New Locations Definition Enclosed and Exposed Waters

The definitions for enclosed and exposed waters locations have now been slightly changed to reflect better the size/ type of locations, skill level required by Instructors and ability to complete practical hours.  

 

 

The “size” of the location has been removed.

Enclosed Flat Water – removed “no wider than 1 km (0.6 miles)”

 

Exposed Waters – removed “ large inland bodies of water greater than 1 km (0.6 miles) wide”

 

New Definition 
 

Enclosed Flat Water locations is now inland waters regardless of size.    

 

Exposed Waters is now defined as coastal only and large harbours. (Like Sydney Harbour, subject to swell)

 

All other location definitions are the same.

 

Instructors need to consider weather and water conditions to decide if conditions are within remit.

 

 

• Inland waterways including rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, canals

• no swell or breaking waves

• wind speed less than 12 knots

• minimal water flow (no more than 2 knots)

• no more than 250 metres (820 ft) from shore

• at least 200 metres (660 ft) from a river mouth

• free of hazards

 

 

• Coastal beaches and bays, very large harbours

• shore break less than 1½ feet

• swell size less than 2ft

• no breaking waves

• wind speed less than 12 knots, offshore wind less than 10 knots

• no more than 250 metres (820ft) from shore

• at least 200 metres (660 ft) from a river mouth

• free of hazards
