Leo Belime is an ASI Surfing Instructor, an ASI Trainer and an experienced surf judge.  At a young age he was travelling to different surfing locations, entering competitions and having fun.   The surf addiction didn’t stop and now he judges surfing competitions, delivers surfing training courses and hopes to use his studies in psychology in the surfing world.  Read more about what has inspired Leo.....

1. What is your background? When and why did you get involved in the surfing world?

In 2000 I tried surfing for the first time at Algarve Surf Clube, trained by Sérgio Brandão. It started out as a summer thing, but quickly became a full-year thing. Sérgio gave us his passion for surfing. He motivated us. For those of us who stayed with the “thrill” bug, he made surfing a real adventure. Fun, challenging and crazy at the same time.

We were always looking for the best waves on the coast, sometimes even driving for hours and then returning to the first beach we had seen. We used to be in a jeep full of boards on top of us, to the point where we couldn't move, walking along the sandy path towards a secret spot and sometimes catching perfect waves, sometimes not really.  We went into all kinds of seas, with all different sizes and winds, nothing stopped us from going surfing.

We skated clinging to the jeep, always being pushed to the limit. We used to go to Volcom parties to be on “mochadas” (“moche” is the act of throwing yourself at one or more people, usually at concerts or festivals).

Deep down, I feel like we lived the true rock'n'roll of surfing in all its dimension. The addiction stuck and I never stopped, nor did anyone in our group. With the surf team, we started the national competition in 2001 and the European competition from 2005 to 2010.

Sérgio took us by van to France every summer. He dedicated his life to training us. He was and still is a second father to me. Throughout my adolescence I was regional champion in my category for several consecutive years, I reached 3rd place in the national ranking of Esperanças, and got a 5th place in a competition of the national Open in 2009. While we were training, the results were the most important.

Looking back, what is really saved is the journey. And what a journey!
 

2. What are you currently doing?

Currently my main role is being a psychologist. And in parallel, I'm a judge in surf championships. I was head judge on several regional and national competitions, and judge on international WSL competitions (junior and QS).

3. When did ASI get in your way?

I discovered ASI through Sérgio Brandão, who brought it to Portugal.

4. Like to belong to Team ASI? What do you teach?

I identify myself with ASI because this is an innovative and efficient entity. It focuses on providing training based on the important aspects for future surf coaches, reducing bureaucratic complications that are not fundamental to the exercise of the profession. I currently teach the Judging Module on the Treinadores de Surfing Grau I course.

5. Tell us some funny/interesting situation that happened during a course.

Not a particular situation, but during trainings, I like to ask trainees to judge a WSL battery. It is generally a very dynamic and interesting moment and sometimes students demonstrate excellent surf analysis skills.

6. How has COVID changed the way you run classes and courses?

The training development did not change anything for the judging module. The only change due to COVID was an increase in the frequency of training given by videoconference.

7. What are your plans and prospects for the future? Continuing in the Industry?

Yes, I intend to stay involved in the surfing world. At the moment, I am temporarily living in France, which is considerably reducing my practice as a judge. When I return to Portugal, I hope to return in force to the trials. Until then, I hope to continue to be there to form the future, to the best of my abilities.

1. Qual é a o teu background? Quando e porque é que te envolveste no mundo no surf?

No ano de 2000 experimentei fazer surf pela primeira vez no Algarve Surf Clube, treinado pelo Sérgio Brandão. Começou como uma coisa de verão, mas rapidamente passou a ser algo para o ano inteiro. O Sérgio passou-nos a paixão pelo surf. Puxou por nós. Àqueles de nós que ficaram com o bicho da pica, ele fez do surf uma verdadeira aventura. Fun, desafiante e louca ao mesmo tempo.

Procurávamos sempre as melhores ondas da costa, às vezes até conduzimos durante horas para depois voltar à primeira praia que tínhamos visto. Chegávamos a estar num jeep cheio de pranchas em cima de nós, ao ponto de não nos podermos mexer, a andar pelo caminho de areia em direção a um secret spot e apanhar às vezes ondas perfeitas, outras vezes nem por isso. Entrávamos em todo o tipo de mar, tamanhos, ventos, nada nos impedia de ir surfar.

Andávamos de skate agarrados ao jeep, sempre a puxar-nos ao limite. Íamos às festas da Volcom fazer mochadas.

No fundo, sinto que vivemos o verdadeiro rock'n'roll do surf em toda a sua dimensão. O vício colou e nunca parei, nem ninguém do nosso grupo parou. Com a equipa de surf, iniciámos a competição nacional no ano de 2001 e europeia desde 2005 até 2010.

O Sérgio levou-nos de carrinha até França todos os verões. Dedicou a vida dele para nos treinar. Foi e ainda é hoje, um segundo pai para mim. Ao longo da minha adolescência fui campeão regional na minha categoria em vários anos consecutivos, cheguei ao 3º lugar no ranking nacional de Esperanças, e consegui um 5º lugar numa prova do nacional Open em 2009. Enquanto treinávamos, os resultados eram o mais importante.

Olhando para trás, o que fica gravado é a jornada. E que jornada!

2. O que é que fazes atualmente?

Atualmente a minha principal função é psicólogo. E em paralelo, sou juiz em campeonatos de surf. Fiz provas regionais e nacionais enquanto chefe de juízes, e provas internacionais da WSL (junior e QS) enquanto juiz. 

3. Quando é que a ASI se cruzou no teu caminho?

Descobri a ASI através do Sérgio Brandão, que a trouxe para Portugal.

4. Gostar de pertencer à Team ASI? O que lecionas?

Identifico-me com a ASI por ser uma entidade inovadora e eficiente. Concentra-se em proporcionar formações baseadas nos aspetos importantes para futuros treinadores de surf, reduzindo as complicações burocráticas não fundamentais ao exercício da profissão. Eu atualmente dou o Módulo de Arbitragem no curso de Treinadores de Surfing Grau I.

5. Conta-nos alguma situação engraçada/interessante que aconteceu durante um curso.

Durante as formações, gosto de pedir aos formandos para julgar uma bateria da WSL. É geralmente muito dinâmico, interessante e alguns demonstram excelentes capacidades de análise de surf. 

6. Como é que o COVID mudou a forma como orientas as aulas e os cursos?

O desenvolvimento da formação não mudou nada para o módulo de julgamento. A única mudança devida ao COVID foi um aumento da frequência de formações dadas por videoconferência.

7. Quais são os teus planos e perspetivas para o futuro? Continuar na Indústria?

Sim, pretendo continuar envolvido no mundo do surf. Neste momento, estou temporariamente a viver em França, o que está a reduzir consideravelmente a minha prática de juiz. Quando voltar a Portugal, espero retomar o julgamento com mais força. Até lá, espero continuar a estar presente para formar o futuro, no melhor das minhas capacidades.
