Sagres is one of Portugal’s most historic towns, located on a headland overlooking a picturesque harbour and surrounded by protected national park, unspoiled beaches, dramatic cliffs and excellent surf breaks. 

The surf school, has been operating since 1996, and is one of the most longest operating and successful schools in Portugal. They offer lessons from beginner to advanced level, competition level coaching,, surf camps and surf trips, and low-cost and fun hostel accommodation. They are also an ASI Instructor Training Centre and authorised to train ASI Level 1 to 3 Surfing Instructors.

Algarve Surf School was set up to share the passion for surfing and to share awareness / create responsible surfers who know rules and etiquette, not just techniques.

Sergio holds ASI L4 Master Surfing Coach qualifications as well as First Aid and Water Rescue certificates.  Sergio was one of the first to set up a surf school in the Algarve, Portugal in and has been actively involved in developing standards and training up other instructors throughout the region and the country. 

Sergio is an elite advanced surfer, has travelled the world surfing and coached in other countries including Australia, Brazil, France & Italy. He is vice president and team coach of the Algarve Surf Club and has personally coached numerous surfing champions over a period of 20 years.

Head Coach Alex Rista has a wealth of surfing instructor and surf school and surf camp operations experience.  He studied Education at University in Italy, and worked as an educational coordinator and trainer before moving to Portugal to pursue his interest in surfing.  He has been instructing all levels from beginner to advanced level since 2007.  Alex is an elite-advanced surfer and has travelled to various countries surfing.

Algarve Surf School offers group and private, beginner and intermediate surfing certificate courses, surf camps, surfing day trips, team building and surfing awareness for kids, adults, parties, school groups, disadvantaged groups and corporates.  Beginner lessons are the core but they also specialise in improvers/intermediate weeks as well as advanced longboard weeks.

The Algarve Surf Shop in Sagres, has a large range of surf gear with board and wetsuit hire.   The Hang Out Café is next door and also owned by Algarve Surf School and is a great place to relax and network with other like-minded surfers.

Sagres has excellent surf conditions with a large choice of surf breaks, boasts beautiful scenery, great conditions for teaching any level.  

Only 30 minutes from Sagres is Lagos.  A lively town with an historic city centre, cobbled streets, surrounded by  ancient Moorish walls and extends along the pretty harbor estuary.    There is a great variety of cafes and shopping and nightlife.  There’s no surf here but each day, Algarve Surf School takes clients to Sagres and back.
