Meet the Team
Coolangatta Learn to Surf is owned and operated by Dave Davison. He is a highly experienced surf coach based in Australia. Dave grew up in Bondi and became a competitive surfer before transitioning into surf coaching.
He has over 40 years of surfing experience and 30 years of coaching experience. Dave has coached various teams, including the Australian team for the ISA World Surfing Games and the Gold Coast junior team. Dave has made the cover of Tracks surfing magazine a few times - on some awesome waves!
Dave has been operating his surf school on the Gold Coast since 1991 and is recognised as one of the most experienced operators Australia-wide.
He has developed a range of surfing programs from beginner to elite level. He specializes in video analysis to help surfers improve their techniques and correct bad habits.
Dave is an ASI Level 4 Master Surfing Coach, a Level 1 Surf Judge, holds his surf rescue, first aid and advanced resuscitation qualifications. He is assisted in the surf school by highly experienced ASI qualified surfing instructors.
Coolangatta Learn to Surf is also an ASI Instructor Training Centre (ITC) and Dave is authorised to train others to be ASI accredited surfing instructors.
Service Overview
Coolangatta Learn to Surf offers group and private surfing lessons and surfing awareness, for kids, adults, parties, school groups, disadvantage groups and corporates. Dave also regularly provides lessons for at risk kids.
Surf lessons and coaching is available from 2 hour lessons to 10 week courses. Dave's special instruction lesson techniques guarantee beginners will be surfing in 20 minutes, and intermediates are guaranteed to learn new skills.
Lessons are structured to beginner, intermediate, advanced or elite level.
Dave also coaches and develops personal elite coaching programs to prepare aspiring surfing champions for the world circuit. He's coached a range of well-known pro surfers.
Kids holiday programs are available in different formats from 2 to 5 days.
School sports groups can also be accommodated for beginners to advanced levels, with customised educational solutions.
Corporate groups can enjoy surfing and team building activities.
Surfboard hire is also available.
All sessions includes surfing technique tips, surfing safety and etiquette and ocean safety.
They also offer photos and videos of your surfing session which is a great way to remember the fun you had riding your first wave!
Location Features
Surf lessons and activities are held at Rainbow Bay, near Coolangatta. It has some of the best learn to surf waves to the Gold Coast.
There is also intermediate and advanced level waves for anyone wanting to improve their surfing ability.
School Features
Surrounding Rainbow Bay are parklands that feature toilets, barbecues, tables, shade structures and beach showers.
It is a favourite spot for families, swimmers, and surfers, offering a relaxed and picturesque beach experience.

Rainbow Bay is part of the World Surfing Reserve, which also includes Snapper Rocks, Kirra, and other iconic surf spots on the southern Gold Coast. This designation highlights the area's exceptional surf quality, cultural significance, and efforts to preserve its pristine natural environment.
Local attractions close to Rainbow Bay include the Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse - an historical site with great views of the coastline. The Centaur Remembrance Walk - a memorial walk honouring the lives lost on the Centaur ship during World War II. The Rainbow Bay Lookout - a scenic spot with picturesque views of the beach and ocean.
Enjoy whale watching from May to September, visitors can spot humpback whales migrating past the beach. As this beach is north-facing, there are stunning sunset views.
