Learn to surf and participate in surfing activities with Jonathan Hampton, an ASI Accredited Surf School.

The school is based at Alexandra Headland, Sunshine Coast Queensland, and specialises in providing services for individuals experiencing persisting mental health issues that prevent them from taking part in activities that support recovery.

Harnessing the therapeutic aspects of the ocean into specially developed programs can assist people in accessing recreational opportunities within the wider community.

Jonathan Hampton has been surfing for over 18 years in and around the Sunshine Coast. Prior to that he grew up surfing beaches in Durban, South Africa before moving to Australia. 

He has been working in the mental field for the last 14 years, including working in intensive family support and the disability sector.

Jonathan is an ASI Accredited Surfing Instructor and holds a Bachelor in Education, a Masters Degree in Social Work and a Diploma in Community Services.

Jonathan set up the surf school to help others deal with stresses like depression and PTSD.   The therapeutic aspects of being in the ocean helps people deal with these issues.  

It’s something he can’t see himself living with and sharing that with people is something he is passionate about. 

Jonathan Hampton offers group and private surfing sessions for individuals experiencing persisting mental health issues and who are accessing the NDIS and have support in accessing different forms of therapy.

Programs are specially developed to assist individuals.  Mental health recovery activities are incorporated into the programs. This might include exploring the sensory based aspects the ocean provides outside a clinical setting such as mindfulness in movement. 

Participants can experience the therapeutic benefits of the ocean, pursue surfing as a way to be outside, exercise and of course be able to surf on their own.

The location has parking, showers, toilets and the local surf club.  

There is also an abundance of cafes and restaurants nearby.

Surfing activities are conducted at Alexandra Headland, Sunshine Coast. 

The conditions are fun, calm and provide an opportunity for people to learn how to surf in a relaxed environment.
