Meet the Team
Summer SUP is owned and operated by Muirti O'Cearnaigh. He is a seasoned water sports professional with over 16 years of full-time teaching experience. Alongside owning a lifeguard training school and being a certified Beach Lifeguard Trainer, Muirti boasts an impressive range of watersports coaching qualifications.
Inspired by his travels across the southern hemisphere and his encounters with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), Muirti established Summer SUP Mayo in 2015. Recognizing the exceptional potential of the local waterways—from serene flat inland waters to exploring the coastline - he created a space for enthusiasts to explore and connect with the sport.
As a reputable operator in the region, Summer SUP Mayo is backed by Muirti’s Level 2 SUP Instructor certification, encompassing both Enclosed Flat Water and Exposed Waters locations. Supporting Muirti are skilled and accredited SUP instructors who share his passion for teaching.
With in-depth knowledge of the area, a wealth of experience, and a commitment to inspiring paddlers of all levels, Summer SUP Mayo ensures an unforgettable journey that will leave you "stoked on the sport of SUP."
Service Overview
Summer SUP offers group and private SUP lessons, rentals, certificate courses, SUP tours and fitness workouts for kids, adults, parties, school groups, backpackers, universities and corporates.
They have a range of exciting activities for all ages and skill levels.
Their daily 90-minute SUP lessons, led by friendly instructors, teach beginners essential skills like paddling, self-rescue, and safety, fostering confidence on the water.
Scenic SUP tours allow participants to explore the stunning local surroundings, with sunset paddles offering vivid evening skies and sunrise sessions including a dawn swim and beach breakfast.
Weekly summer camps in July and August provide a mix of paddleboarding, kayaking, water safety, and games for kids and teens aged 10 to 16, all in a fun and safe environment.
For added fun, families and groups can enjoy the Giant SUP Adventure, a super-sized inflatable paddleboarding experience.
Once lessons are completed, board rentals are also available for independent exploration of the waterways.
Location Features
Summer SUP School sessions are held at Old Head Beach and offers an unparalleled experience, combining natural beauty, excellent conditions, and convenient amenities.
Located along the iconic Wild Atlantic Way, the east-facing beach is uniquely positioned, offering shelter from southern and western winds. This makes it a perfect spot for stand-up paddling, with calm waters that cater to both beginners and seasoned paddlers alike.
Paddlers are treated to awe-inspiring views of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay. The beach's pristine white sand, crystal-clear waters, and its mild microclimate make every session an absolute delight.
Located just behind the beach is Old Head Wood. It is one of the last old native woodlands in Mayo and is a Special Area of conservation. IT is over 42 acres, featuring native oak trees, birch, rowan and willow. Paddle past the woodlands and enjoy the stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere.
It's a place where nature feels almost untouched, yet incredibly accessible.
Summer SUP also operates a school at Louisburgh, Co. Mayo and in Cork City.
