Meet the Team
SUP Down South is owned and operated by Julian Foale, an elite-level surfer with 35 years of experience in surfing. His involvement in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) started after a surfing-related incident in Bali led to him not able to surf regularly afterward. So Julian turned to SUP as a way to stay engaged with the ocean during wave-free periods.
Since its establishment in 2016, SUP Down South has been recognised as a regional leader. The SUP school was created by Julian to introduce others to the sport, health benefits, to pursue his interest in being in and on the ocean, and show case the scenic beaches where he lives, all ideal for paddling.
Julian holds ASI Level 2 SUP Instructor and Level 2 Surfing Coach certifications, along with surf rescue and first aid certification. He is also a professional firefighter, certified in public safety, incident management, and training and assessment.
The SUP school is supported by a team of qualified ASI-accredited instructors and SUP Yoga teachers, ensuring high-quality instruction and safety.
Services Overview
SUP Down South offers group and private lessons, SUP Wise learn to SUP certificate courses, SUP tours, team building and rentals for kids, adults, backpackers, parties, hens and stag parties, school groups, and corporates.
The school provides a safe and enjoyable environment for both beginners and intermediate paddlers, guided by ASI-accredited instructors. Their goal is to ensure participants leave with a solid understanding of SUP basics and the ability to paddle safely and confidently in the future, all the while having fun.
SUP tours explore the coastal areas and are tailored to suit different levels of paddling experience.
Regularly held SUP Yoga sessions add a unique, relaxing twist to the SUP experience.
SUP rentals are also available for those with prior paddling experience.
A range of team building activities can be tailored to suit the group.
To make the experience even more special, participants have the option to capture their stand-up paddleboarding journey with professional photos and or GoPro hire.
Location Features
SUP Down South operates primarily from Port Willunga. It offers a naturally sheltered amphitheater, providing protection from the prevailing summer South Easterly winds. Here, you can paddle on calm, crystal-clear waters surrounded by pristine white sands—a truly idyllic setting.
The area is steeped in history, with attractions such as the remnants of an old jetty, fisherman’s caves, The Star of Greece shipwreck, and the northern edge of the Aldinga Aquatic Reserve—all within paddling distance. There’s no shortage of fascinating sights to explore.
SUP Yoga sessions take place at Port Willunga beach near the iconic Jetty Poles, conditions permitting. These sessions provide a relaxing experience, allowing participants to unwind to the soothing sounds of the ocean in shavasana.
Depending on weather and conditions, other nearby locations are also used, including The Onkaparinga Estuary, Aldinga Beach, and Port Noarlunga. These alternative spots ensure there’s always a suitable place to paddle, tailored to your skill level and activity.
School Features
Port Willunga Beach has free car parking, public toilets, with food and refreshments nearby. It is a family friendly beach due to is calm, protected waters and soft sands.

Port Willunga Beach and surrounding areas are a perfect destination for water lovers, nature and food enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.
Port Willunga Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters, white sands, and striking golden cliffs. Paddle up to the Fisherman’s Caves, which are carved into the cliffs and were historically used by fishermen to store their equipment.
The Star of Greece wreckage, a three-masted iron ship, was wrecked off Port Willunga in 1888 during a storm while transporting wheat to Britain, resulting in 17 deaths and led to improvements in maritime safety.
Port Willunga was once a bustling port for trade. The Jetty Remains – weathered pylons dating back to 1860, are a popular tourism attraction.
Other natural attractions nearby include the Aldinga Aquatic Reserve offering vibrant marine life, making it perfect for SUP, snorkeling, diving. Maslin Beach boasts dramatic cliffs and pristine natural surroundings. Onkaparinga River National Park provides opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and observing diverse wildlife.
