Learn how to stand up paddle and have SUP lessons or join in SUP tours at Surf the Bay Surf School. An ASI accredited SUP school, located at Broulee and Narooma with sessions on scenic and calm inland waterways.
They are popular tourist destinations, approximately 300 kilometres south of Sydney and 150 kilometres from Canberra.
Meet the Team
Surf the Bay Surf School is proudly owned and operated by Tim Lassau and Glen Hall.
Established in 2010, Surf the Bay has quickly become one of the top destinations for surfing and stand-up paddleboarding in the area.
Tim and Glen, lifelong locals and experienced elite level surfers, enthusiastically embraced stand-up paddling as it rose in popularity.
Both are local school teachers with over 20 years of national and international teaching experience both in the classroom and on the water.
Since 2007, they have held surf coaching qualifications and have taught thousands of people over the years. They also hold current surf rescue and first aid certifications and actively assist in local surf club patrols.
Tim and Glenn are supported by a team of experienced ASI SUP instructors, who also hold local extensive knowledge of the waterways.
Service Overview
Surf the Bay offers individual and group stand-up paddle lessons for families, kids, adults, parties, community groups, and corporates.
You can learn the basics of SUP, including safety, standing, paddling, stopping, and turning.
Or join in guided flat-water tours where you can explore the inland lakes and rivers, spotting marine life. SUP tours are also held in coastal areas for those with more experience.
Surf the Bay also specialize in customised school programs, which are VET-approved and fit into sports curriculums. These programs can include single-day to week-long activity camps, with multiple activities.
You will receive personalised service with local expertise to help you find the best and safest paddling spots and offer interesting tips about the area.
They are also an ASI accredited surf school and offer surfing lessons for beginners to intermediate surfers at nearby Broulee Beach.
Location Features
Surf the Bay offers stand up paddling sessions in beautiful and calm inland waters on the Tomaga River at Tomakin near Broulee and on the Dalmeny River at Narooma.
These locations have been specially chosen to their safe paddling conditions, scenery and the ability to see a large variety of wildlife, both in and out of the water, as you paddle along.
Tomago River is part of the Batemans Park boasting an array of wildlife. At both locations, you will can spot fish, crabs, stingrays, vast number of birds, and threatened species such as the Yellow-bellied Glider and various cockatoos. There is also a pelican population at Dalmeny.
Open water coastal tours are held on the foreshores of the Marine Park, where you might see fish, stingrays, seals, dolphins, and even whales.
Relax and enjoy nature all round. Surf the Bay will also choose the best and safest times to paddle at these locations.
School Features
Both locations offer parking, toilets, cafes and designated picnic spots along the river where you can relax and enjoy a meal with family and friends.

Broulee, Tomakin, and Narooma abound with diverse wildlife and stunning scenery. Connect with nature and explore the local area from a SUP board.
Tomago River at Tomakin (near Broulee) is a picturesque waterway with clear waters and a variety of habitats from mangrove forest to saltmarshes and swamp woodlands. It is a protected area and part of the Batemans Marine Park, where you can see a diverse array wildlife including fish, crabs, stingrays, birds, and even threatened shorebird species like the pied oyster catcher and hooded plover.
The Dalmeny River at Narooma is part of the scenic Wagonga Inlet system. It's a beautiful area known for its calm waters and picturesque surroundings, and variety of wildlife including spotted rays, soldier crabs and threatened species, such as the Yellow-bellied Glider, Glossy Black Cockatoos, Grey-headed Flying-foxes, and Gang-gang Cockatoos. The Wagonga Inlet, near Dalmeny, is also home to pelicans and other bird species.
Aside from paddling, you can explore the local beaches at Broulee and along the coast, with white sands, and crystal clear waters.
At Narooma (Dalemny River), see Ocean Parade Lookout: Offers stunning views of Dalmeny Beach and Montague Island. Visit Barunguba Montague Island: A popular spot for whale watching, diving, and fishing. Explore the Mill Bay Boardwalk a lovely walkway where you can spot seals and other wildlife. Visit the local cafés with local product and coastal vibes. Or check out the Big Niles Brewing Co: A local craft beer brewery.
At Tomakin (near Broulee), see the panoramic views of the coastline from the Broulee Lookout. Explore the Broulee Island Walk: A scenic 3.2-km trail perfect for birding, hiking, and walking. Visit the nearby Mogo Wildlife park and local cafes and arts shops, take in some golf and mini-golf at the Crackajack Golf club.
