Learn how to surf and have surfing lessons at SurfLewis & Harris Surf School, an ASI accredited surf school, located at Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, far north Scotland, 40 miles off the coast.
Situated about 276 miles (444 kms) from Edinburgh, with a ferry journey from Ullapool, it provides an unparalleled escape for surf enthusiasts.
Meet the Team
SurfLewis & Harris is owned and operated by Rodney Jamieson, an elite-level surfer who was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis. With experience surfing some of the world's most spectacular waves, Rodney brings a wealth of expertise to his surf school.
Established in 2009, SurfLewis & Harris was created to share the incredible surf conditions and stunning beauty of this remote island with others. Rodney's background includes over 20 years as a surfing instructor and over 25 years of personal surfing experience, ensuring a safe, structured, and enjoyable learning environment for every student.
Rodney’s qualifications include ASI Surfing Instructor Level 1, ASI SUP Surfing Instructor Level 3, Crew member of the local RNLI lifeboat, VHF Radio certification and Advanced First Aid and Sea Survival Techniques.
Additionally, Rodney is a qualified youth worker with over 20 years of experience working with young people.
He is supported by a team of ASI-qualified instructors, providing top-tier surf training in this remarkable setting.
Services Overview
SurfLewis & Harris offer group and private surfing lessons, Surf Wise certificate courses, team building, surfing awareness for kids, adults, parties, school groups, parties, hens and stag parties and corporates.
The beginner lessons include beach safety, equipment use and special surfing techniques, developed by Rodney, to get you up and riding in no time.
Join in the Junior and Senior Surf Squads: tailored for those with more experience looking to advance.
Groups of up to 16 can be accommodated, perfect for schools, colleges, corporates or special events.
The surf school also has a range of equipment for rentals, including softboards for a selection of beginner soft surfboards (Alder 7’, 8’, and 9’ boards) and advanced boards (ranging from 6’2 to 6’10 thruster/fish, Mals, and Longboards).
Wetsuit hire, is available including 5/4mm C-Skins wetsuits, designed to keep you warm in the Hebridean waters.

Location Features
SurfLewis & Harris are based near Stornoway, the main town in the Hebrides and we will travel to meet you at the designated point for lesson s.
Most of the lessons are based at Garry Beach in Lewis and Nisabost beach in Harris. These are excellent beaches for learning. Surf lessons are provided at other beaches of Lewis and Harris depending on conditions.
Due to its position in the North Atlantic, the Isle of Lewis and Harris have consistent surf all year round.
Surfing opportunities on the Isle of Lewis cater to all skill levels. Beginners can enjoy small, sheltered waves, while intermediate surfers have access to larger waves that challenge and refine their skills.
For advanced surfers, the island offers exciting reef and point breaks that promise a thrilling experience.
Set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs, golden sandy beaches and the turquoise waters, every surf session is stunningly picturesque. Plus there are uncrowded beaches and wildlife all round.

There is parking, toilets, changing rooms and cafes nearby to the surf breaks.
The good thing about Lewis and Harris is nothing is too far away.
