Locations and Conditions
Enclosed Flat Water paddling locations are defined as:
Inland waterways and bodies of water including rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, canals
With no swell or breaking waves
Wind speed less than 12 knots
Water depth no less than 1 metre (1 metre (3ft))
Free from hazards
Being no more than 250 metres (820ft) from shore
Being at least 200 metres (660ft) away from a river mouth
Pre-requisites
Swim 50 metres (without bouyancy aid)
Tread water for 5 minutes (in deep water)

To paddle correctly and safely at this level, requires the following skills and knowledge:
Environment & Safety
Identify the characteristics of enclosed flat water environment
Identify safe weather conditions and how to forecast weather
Understand and identify different water conditions
Identify location hazards when paddling
How to choose a safe SUP location
Identify how to care for the enclosed flat water SUP environment
Personal Safety
Identify personal hazards that apply when paddling
Understand why correct paddle technique can minimise muscle injury
Apply correct SUP flat water etiquette
Self-rescue method using prone paddling
Equipment & Clothing
Choose suitable flat water board, leash and equipment
Methods to carry board correctly including entry and exit
Correct use of leashes
Choose suitable clothing for paddling
Paddle Skills
Paddle Stroke:
Paddle in standing position with confidence
Demonstrate correct paddling technique – position, posture, paddle control, reach, hinging
Identify the 5 phases of the paddling stroke and perform correctly – entry, catch, power phase, exit, recovery
Identify what cadence is (how fast your paddle stroke is) and why we measure it

Choose your SUP Wise Delivery Format
ASI offers different SUP Wise delivery formats, based on how much time you have and how much you want to learn. They are also a great way to meet other like-minded paddlers.
SUP Wise Activ (Enclosed Flat Water)
Fun on water practical introduction sessions designed to introduce you to SUP and help progress your skills.
There are 3 sessions (2 hours) each. (1) Starter (2) Improver (3) Cruiser.
Bonus: SUP Wise Activ Logbook, small easy to carry reference, with log to record your sessions.
Enrol with one of our experienced ASI accredited SUP Schools.
SUP Wise Level 1 Certificate Course (Enclosed Flat Water)
This certificate course is ideal for people who would like to gain more indepth knowledge and skills and get you paddling with confidence and some self-sufficiency.
Practical on water sessions, covering key theory points, delivered over 10 hours (approx. 5 sessions of 2 hours each).
Bonus: SUP Wise Logbook, participation certificate

ASI Stand Up Paddlers Card / SUP Wise Intensiv (Enclosed Flat Water)
SUP Wise Intensiv provides more broad based, in-depth knowledge and skills so you are paddling with confidence, ease and be self-sufficient.
Competency based course assessing your paddle stroke, other SUP skills and safety knowledge and skills.
Stand Up Paddler’s Card is issued - credit card sized ID card that you can also use to rent boards.
Online manual with extensive content and videos. A great reference.
